How to stop the ‘black-listed’ academy

A top Australian school is in the firing line after it emerged that a board meeting had been called without the full board having been informed of the agenda.

Key points:Academy chairman Dr Peter Sainz said the meeting was to address “the need for transparency and accountability” and not to “dismantle or undermine the ethos” of the institutionThe board is due to meet in Melbourne on Monday and TuesdayThe ABC has contacted the Australian Academy of Arts and Technology for comment.

The academy’s chairman, Dr Peter Ritchie, said the board was not informed of an agenda item before the meeting and had not been asked to attend the meeting.

“The board has agreed to the agenda item, but the agenda has not been published and we will need to be consulted on the agenda before we can consider it,” he said in a statement.

“We will need the full understanding of the board to determine the scope and intent of the meeting.”

The ABC understands Dr Ritchie and the board are working through the meeting agenda.

It is understood the agenda included a discussion of the “resilience of our profession” and the “ongoing impact of the opioid crisis” and an acknowledgement that “there are significant barriers to accessing tertiary education”.

Mr Sains said he had asked for a meeting to discuss “the needs of the academy and to ensure that it is clear the board is informed and is being listened to”.

“I hope that we can work towards a better balance in our board and in our community, and I want to thank the board for being patient with us in this process,” he wrote.

“I am grateful for the work they have done to try and build a more resilient and accountable Australian tertiary industry.”

My concern is that there are a number of board members that may be reluctant to share their view on these matters, and that in turn might not lead to a better outcome for the community.
