Oscar winner in ‘The Big Sick’: Oscars 2017 winners list
Hollywood has finally come to terms with the Oscars, with all three of the best picture winners having been nominated in the past few years.
The nominees for best picture in the 2018 category, for instance, include John Ridley’s sci-fi thriller The Big Sick, which was nominated for best director in 2018.
However, while the majority of the nominations are on the big screen, the Academy has been slow to respond to their appeal.
For instance, the Oscars have not nominated any of the big three motion pictures from last year – The Martian, Jurassic World and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies – for best foreign-language film.
Instead, they nominated Moonlight, the first-ever film from Chinese director Zhang Yimou, and the first feature from South Korean director Lee Seung-Woo, both of which were nominated in 2018 for best international film.
Other films that have been nominated for foreign-only Oscar nominations include the film of the year contender Black Swan and the directorial debut of Italian director Stefano Sollima.
Despite the lack of big-screen foreign-related nominations, the awards have been a big deal for Asian American cinema.
The Oscars were also the first time an Asian American was nominated in a major international category, and Asian American actors and actresses have been increasingly seen in the film industry.
For example, Auli’i Cravalho, the Taiwanese-born American actress, has starred in the hit American comedy Moonlight and was nominated to star in the upcoming film of her own, The Martian.
Cravalhotos nomination has also raised hopes for Asian-American actors who are now in the spotlight.
