When a Georgia school offers cyber safety classes
A cybersecurity school has become the latest to offer cyber safety courses to its students, offering cyber safety education to about 60 students in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
The school, Milton Academy, offers the course in an online format that allows students to take classes in the classroom and learn about cybersecurity.
The students are also encouraged to sign up for a smartphone app, which allows them to see how to set up a secure network and get online, the school said.
The course has been a hit with parents, students and educators.
“We have a very small, very small population, so we have a pretty large population that has the skills that we need to be safe,” said Alex Ponce, a Milton Academy teacher who runs the online class.
The courses also give students practical skills to help them take the next step.
“It’s an online course that gives students the tools they need to protect themselves, to make sure that the devices they have on their devices, that they’re protected from attacks,” he said.
Ponce said the school also is teaching a course on cybersecurity to about 30 students who are considering a career in the industry.
He said students can take the course for free.
The program has become a hit for the school, which is one of a handful offering cyber-safety classes.
The other schools include the Mater Academy in Atlanta, Georgia; the Milton Academy in Milton, Georgia, and the Cybersecurity Institute in Atlanta.
“What we want to do is give students the skills they need so that they can take that next step and become a real cybersecurity expert,” said Elizabeth F. Wilson, executive director of the Cyber Security Institute.
She said the students in Milton Academy have taken the online course and are eager to get into the classroom.
“They’re really excited about it,” she said.
In a statement, the Georgia Cyber Security Association said it supports the school’s effort to offer the online cyber safety course.
“We encourage students to enroll in the cyber safety curriculum, which can help them learn how to secure their devices and protect their information,” said the statement.
