When a new badge is a badge of honor
A new badge of pride for the Oakland Police Department has been unveiled, after the academy issued its first-ever blue and red police uniform.
The academy, which has seen a rapid growth in popularity, has been looking to incorporate the uniform with other departments around the city, such as the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the Oakland City Police Department, the Berkeley Police Department and the Oakland Community College District.
“The idea was to create something that has a certain kind of style, but has also got a lot of personality,” Academy President John Deen said.
“So you don’t want to just be just blue or red, you want to be something that is different from everything else out there.”
Deen said the academy has had its own idea about the blue and green uniform before, and that the new one is inspired by the academy’s former blue and white uniforms.
“We were really looking at what was iconic in our department, and what we felt like that would be something to be able to wear on our uniform,” he said.
While the academy uniforms will be a departure from the current blue and gold color scheme, Deen was adamant that the uniform was not meant to be a statement against police violence.
“It’s not about police officers, it’s not just about police, it is about people and it is a statement about the human condition,” he explained.
“We have a very, very big issue with police violence in our city.
It’s a real problem.”
The academy’s blue and yellow uniform is not just a fashion statement, but it is also a statement of support for those officers who have made a career out of protecting and serving the community.
The Academy has seen an influx of new recruits since the academy became the first academy in the country to accept the application process.
The first batch of recruits for the academy, who are now just over a week into their new jobs, came from the community in the city of Richmond, Calif.
Deen called the students the “golden generation.”
“I can say this, and I think you can say it for everybody, but when you come to college, you come here because you want a job, and you want something,” he told ABC News.
“And they just came here because they love the Academy.
And they’re excited to see the future of what we’re doing.”
While the blue uniforms are just one aspect of the Academy’s vision for the future, the academy will also have a number of other initiatives that will be more visible to the public.
For example, the Academy will have a website, where people will be able share their thoughts about the new uniform and learn about upcoming initiatives.
Deen also wants to keep the academy going.
“This is a great way to show that we’re committed to this city, to this academy, and to our community, and it’s a great time to have,” he added.
“I think the people of Oakland will be very proud of the next four years.”
